The Saga of Skalf Grimblood....

Postby Greywolf » Sun Jun 27, 2010 4:08 pm

Skalf Grimblood was elevated to the Wolf Guard retinue of Wolf Lord Lukan Greywolf around two centuries ago and has served the Wolf Lord faithfully ever since. It was a battle in the Helican sub-sector, on a planet called Morphian Prime where this ascension took place.

Morphian Prime was the major planet in a minor system important to the Imperium for its agricultural production to the sector. The planet had come under attack from an Ork Warboos and his forces whose Rokk had dropped out of the warp outside of the system and had slowly drifted towards Morphian Prime. As fate would have it, the Ork Rokk drifted right into orbit around the heavily populated planet and the Orks took no time in launching an assault on the unsuspecting population.

As the first Rokks began to impact the surface and the planetary governor realized what was happening, an asto-telepathic distress call went out for aid. As luck would have it, this distress call was picked up by one of the Imperiums Astartes checkpoints where fighting units dock to refit and refuel and to pick up other units of their chapter that have been on assignment elsewhere or with other branches of the Imperium's vast military. At the checkpoint during the reception of this call was the battle cruiser, The IceWolf, belonging to Wolf Lord Lukan Greywolf and a battle contingent of his Great Company.

Wolf Lord Greywolf finished refitting at the station and made all haste to relieve the planet of the Ork invaders, which thankfully was only two days of warp travel away. The Wolves aboard prepared themselves for the coming battle as there would be precious little time for much else with such a short jump to their next engagement. Thunderhawks were made ready to help the cruiser knock the main Rokk out of orbit if not destroy it altogether and the cruiser's drop pods were readied to ensure a fast deployment once the ship was in orbit. Among the many Wolves on board the ship, was a freshly promoted to Grey Hunter named Skalf Grimblood.

Skalf had been elevated to Grey Hunter along with his Blood Claw pack after leading his pack safely back through a Tyranid infested hulk found adrift and their sergeant had been killed. Once back aboard The IceWolf, the hulk had been destroyed by a combined effort of the melta charges the Blood Claws had planted and torpedoes and battery fire from the cruiser. The Blood Claw pack now found themselves promoted to Grey Hunters and assigned to the spear head of the assault alongside their Wolf Lord and his chosen Wolf Guard warriors.

Wolf Lord Greywolf had chosen to lead from the front and strike for the heart of the Ork attack on the planet hoping to eliminate the leadership and send the Orks into disarray making them easy targets for the remainder of the assault force.

As planned, The IceWolf arrived at the planet on the opposite side of the Rokk allowing the cruiser to safely disembark their drop pods before moving on to tackle the Rokk itself. The drop pods screamed for the planet, each pack having a predetermined landing zone to hit.

Skalf's drop pod screamed through the upper atmosphere of the planet as the Wolves inside prepared their bolters, checked their power armor systems, and made ready to disembark upon landing. The drop pods count down ticked down to impact and the retro jets fired just in time to keep the pod from burying itself into the planet and killing all those aboard. The release catches clanged and the sides dropped like the petals of a metallic flower to allow the Wolves inside to disembark. Sergeat Ironhammer, yelled disperse and the Wolves took up a defensive pattern around the pod.

They had landed directly on target, but found no immediate threats in the area, so moved out to link up with the other packs in their drop. They found the pod of Wolf Lord Greywolf 100 meters to their right and linked up with their leader. A quick assessment of the battlefield and Greywolf had located the main push of the Orks. Through the enhanced optics of his helmet, he found what was to be no doubt the leader of this section of the Ork line. A huge brute towering over those around him as the Wolves towered over normal humans. Greywolf communicated instructions to each of the packs in the assault force and gave the order to charge.

Skalf's pack ran right along with the Wolf Lord's and hit the Orks line with the explosion of bolter shells and ringing of metal. The Orks so intent on butchering the PDF forces they had been facing, were completely caught off guard from the howling Wolves charging into their flanks. The assault force drove deep into their lines taking minimal casualties as the Orks floundered to react to this new challenge.

The Wolves drove right for the leader and soon Wolf Lord Greywolf was exchanging blows with the behemoth. Power crackled as Russ forged Frost Blade met crudely constructed power claw. As the two mighty combatants dueled, another Ork not quite as big, but what looked to be definitely the leader's second came up behind Greywolf intent on running him through with his own power claw. Skalf having seen what was about to happen, quickly dispatched the Ork he had been embroiled with and charged into the fray to save his leader. He bolted into the air and came down on the back of the brute. Hanging on for all he was worth, he managed to drive his chain sword down into the mechanics of the power claw. With a horrible screech of metal and flying of sparks, the power field around the weapon died and starting leaking hydraulic fluid as it went dead at the end of the Ork's arm. With the clear danger to Greywolf stopped, Skalf dropped his chainsword and wrapped his mighty arms around the neck of the Ork Nob. He struggled and he strained and the beast fought like a maddened carnodon. The veins in Skalf's arms and neck were bulging and he was starting to exhaust when the inevitable crack of neck bone told him the Ork was finished. The massive creature stood immobile for a few seconds before toppling over with Skalf unceremoniously tossed from his back. Skalf looked up in time to see Greywolf decapitate the leader in a spray of gore which sent panic through the Ork lines and they began to break.

From here on, the details of the clean up and follow up battles to reclaim the planet are recorded elsewhere, so we will skip ahead slightly.

The Wolf Lord's Wolf Guard had witnessed Skalf's selfless act to save their leader and made an account of the tale to Greywolf himself. Wolf Lord Greywolf elevated Skalf to a position in his Wolf Guard retinue and rewarded him with a rune etched Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield to supplement his show of strength against the Orks.

Since that day, Skalf has faithfully served Wolf Lord Greywolf on numerous missions and has even lead contingents of his Great Company into battle for the last two centuries. But as time went by Skalf remained very close with his original pack mates and when given the option, chose them to be beside him in battle or lead them himself. Inevitably, the pack was whittled down over time and the last pack mate before Skalf passed in a grand battle against the forces of Chaos. Skalf was the remaining member of his pack. Although excluded from taking the road of the lone wolf due to his Wolf Guard status, Skalf's honor would not allow him to let his former pack go unavenged and approached Wolf Lord Greywolf with his decision.

Wolf Lord Greywolf was very reluctant to let one of his most loyal and trustworthy Wolf Guard take up the oath of the lone wolf, but could see there was to be no changing Skalf's mind. The Wolf Lord would grant Skalf's request on one condition, he would not be allowed to wander off and just die alone. He would be allowed to seek his death in a mighty fashion, but only by undertaking actual missions assigned to the Wolf Lord's Great Company that required a single unit. To this end he would be given the mission and assigned a pack of Grey Hunters to carry out the mundane aspects of the mission while he kept what ever horror he was seeking death against occupied.

And thus the Sage of Skalf Grimblood begins.......

NICE START JEFF!!!! This is exactly what I hope to see people doing! I'm working on mine now, and I see I have quite a bit to live up to. Thanks!
What aims do the Orks have? What is the point of a tornado?

Skalf and his Grey Hunter pack were called into the lair of Wolf Lord Greywolf. Their Great Company had been on patrol in the Damocles Gulf when a distress signal was received aboard The IceWolf. A planet called Meridian was being overrun by bands of human pirates and in need of cleansing. The local PDF was containing the majority of the bands, but Meridian was full of rural areas outside of the main hives and separated by dense sections of forest.

Wolf Lord Greywolf sent word that his Great Company would make haste to Meridian (a decision easily made due to its close proximity to The IceWolf's current location) and help the beleaguered PDF mop up the last of the pirate bands still resisting authorities in the much less populated areas.

One of the pirate vessels had managed to drop supplies for one of its units planetside, but had overshot the target as it was harried by an Imperial Navy ship which had also picked up the distress signal and had moved in to help. The pirates in this area would no doubt be in need of these supplies and with them, could renew attacks on the civilian population.

Wolf Lord Greywolf assigned various duties and sectors to his Great Company and gave the mission of locating and destroying this particular pirate band to Skalf and his small retinue of Grey Hunters. While the pirates had not deployed any large creatures or rogue psykers to test Skalf's oath, a lone Sentinel walker had been spotted by survivors of their raids and this would allow Skalf to at least tackle something of size.

For the mission Skalf assembled his Grey Hunters and also requisitioned a Razorback from the armory. They were dispatched via Thunderhawk just outside of the last recorded trajectory coordinates of the supply drop.

Auspex readings had located the scattered supplies and the Wolves split up in hopes of destroying the caches and possibly eliminating some of the pirates into the bargain. They dispersed with SGT Hakon and Haegr taking the right flank and Hef, Bjorn, and Ulf taking the Razorback around the left. Skalf himself worked his way forward of the drop site and started his prowling.

Haegr made for the closest supply drop. He was on his way back to the rendezvous point when a stray sniper round clipped his leg and took him out of the action.

SGT Hakon worked his way up to supply point number two and met up with Skalf.

The group in the Razorback edged forward towards supply point three and ran right into the thick of the pirates in the process of procuring those supplies. The twin-linked heavy bolters opened up on the pirates, but failed to hit its target while blowing chunks of the masonry out of the building they were hiding behind.

The pirates returned fire and a krak missile wound its way through the sky to find the side armor of the Razorback, completely destroying the vehicle and wounding Ulf with a large piece of shrapnel to the knee.

Bjorn and Hef disembarked to take the fight to the pirates. SGT Hakon meanwhile, grabbed the supplies at his point and made for the rendezvous with Skalf covering his movement. After running a gauntlet of sniper and autocannon fire, he made it safely back to the point.

Bjorn and Hef continued to take fire. Hef went down when a lucky las round found the weakened joint in his armor at the hip. Bjorn incensed at his comrades wounding, blasted the pirate with a bolt pistol round, smiling in satisfaction as his went down with a scream of pain and then charged the next closest pirate. After trading several blows with the bandit, his chainsword finally dug deep into the pirate's leg, putting him down. Bjorn charged up the steps after him.

Skalf had been busy as well. Fending off a plasma toting pirate and preparing for his assault on the sentinel. As fate would have it, he didn't have to wait long. The sentinel charged Skalf. They exchanged blows, but Skalf finally brought the machine down with three mighty blows from his thunder hammer. He then turned his attention to the pirate with the plasma gun and proceeded to smash him asunder.

During this time, two of the pirates had been able to secure and make off with two of the supply containers.

As Skalf and Bjorn were about to finish off the remaining resistance, a call from Wolf Lord Greywolf pulled them away. They met at the rendezvous, gathered their wounded comrades, and made haste to the rally point. The pirates slunk back into the forest with the few supplies they managed to grab to prepare for more debased activities.

Skalf's reckoning would have to wait for another day.

Shortly after facing the pirate menace, Skalf was sent on an errand of great importance by Wolf Lord Greywolf. Unfortunately, Skalf's ship was lost in the warp after two weeks of travel. Efforts have been mounted by the Great Company to discover the ship's location, but all attempts to date have failed. This could be the end of the saga for Skalf......or is it?
