The End is Nigh! -- Apocalypse Megabattle (03/13)

Postby Kinne » Thu Feb 25, 2010 1:50 pm

Alright folks, we're looking at just over two weeks left for the campaign. The Cult only has two weeks to get to the city, and right now it's not looking so good.

Regardless of whether the Cult reaches their prize, Imperial reinforcements are en route. If the Alliance is not making a desperate last stand within the city proper, the Cult will have to beat a hasty retreat as death drops from the skies.

The Apocalypse megabattle will be on Saturday, March 13th. It will start promptly at 11:00, and players are expected to show up by 10:15. I know it seems like 45 minutes is a lot of time, but as we need to assign players to tables, review special rules and leave enough time for people to get their armies out, the time will pass very quickly. If you show up late, don't be shocked if you find yourself sitting out. Please plan accordingly.

Each player will make a 2,500 point list, using normal Apocalypse rules, so everything is legal with the following exceptions. First, Vehicle Design Rules are (as always) illegal. Two, you are allowed to mix your armies as normal, but as this is part of a campaign, you cannot use any models from the opposing faction. So a Cult player could mix Tyranids, Orks and Chaos Marines, but wouldn't be able to take loyalist Marines or Eldar. Third, units which affect friendly models only effect models in your force. So if you have a farseer and a devestator squad, you could guide them, but you cannot guide the heavy weapons platoon of the player next to you. Psychic powers and abilities that target enemy units but may effect your fellow players (such as Doom or Null Zone) will still work as normal. For example, if you Doom an enemy unit and one of your allies fires at said unit, they can re-roll hits as normal.

All models must be fully assembled and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), unless they follow the normal Counts As rules (i.e. all of the Dreadnoughts in your army count as having an Assault Cannon and Dread CCW. . .ask me if you need clarification on this). Your models do NOT have to be painted (although the pictures will look prettier if they are). Each table will have a Table Captain, which will be appointed by myself and Dez, and will be responsible for making sure the game progresses at a good pace at their particular table.

Lastly, a note on model counts. Obviously, this is Apocalypse, so things like The Green Tide and Endless Swarm are legal and even welcomed. However, if you plan on fielding a lot of models, be prepared to move them QUICKLY. Having a teammate help you move is acceptable, provided it doesn't slow down their speed of play. If you're found to be lagging behind everyone else, you may miss out on things like your Shooting Phase to make up the time difference, so play fast!

More details will be released as this event gets closer. For questions, head to the End is Nigh! questions thread.

Alright, here's a little more information. The game will have a six-and-a-half hour time limit, granting a little wiggle room at the end in case we get through an uneven number of player turns. There will be no included lunch break, but we will get food, so people can eat at the tables. Here's the basic itinerary:

10:00 - 10:15 -- Players arrive and sign in

10:15 - 10:45 -- Players are given their table assignments and begin removing armies from cases

10:45 - 11:00 -- Event organizers go over any special rules, apocalypse rules, terrain rules, etc. Players choose strategic assets and make deployment bids.

11:00 -- To arms!

~ 1:30 -- Food will arrive. If you would like to eat before this, bring your own food. And remember that snacks are available

5:30 -- If an even number of player turns have been played (i.e. three or four for each side), play will cease. If the number of player turns is uneven, play will continue no later than 6:30 in an attempt to even things out.

6:30 -- Victory conditions will be examined and winners declared.

Also bear in mind that participating in the event also means that you're going to help clean up after the event. The Event Organizers will handle getting volunteers to set up the tables, terrain, etc., but all participants will be required to help move tables and terrain, as well as generally neaten up the store once the battle is over.

Of especial note is that these timetables will be strictly adhered to. If you show up late, you may still get to play, but you will most likely miss out on the opportunity of choosing strategic assets, discussing important strategy, etc.

A few more details on this. As stated above, everything normally allowed in Apocalypse is allowed here, save for mixing forces from both sides of the campaign. While this does allow for things like Da Green Tide and Endless Swarm, just bear in mind that there will be a lot of people there that day, and we all want to get as many turns in as possible. If you know that you won't be able to play in a timely manner if you field a ton of infantry models, then perhaps a force that consists of more vehicles or monstrous creatures might be the better approach. Or maybe try to convince a friend of yours who can't stay for the whole day or just doesn't have the army to come by and help you out in those earlier movement/shooting/assault phases when you still have a ton of models and a ton of dice to roll.

So when you're building a list, be sure to think of your own play style and speed, and pick a list that isn't necessarily the most powerful, but the most fun, and one that you'll easily be able to use.

In addition, if anyone in the campaign would like to play, and is in need of models for this please let me know (Dez) I have tons of extra stuff. I'd even let somebody drive Stompy, say if you can't play for the whole day or wotnot ;)

One last, important thing of note – both sides will be responsible for holding and capturing objectives. We will be using the standard Apocalypse guidelines for this, so Infantry units above half strength and not falling back can capture objectives. So be sure your side at least has a few ground-pounders, and isn’t all vehicles and monstrous creatures!
