I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

Super easy to do. Spray white, then follow up with spraying Minitaire Ghost Tint: Plasma Fluid. Go back over the highest portions with white using a brush once the ghost tint dries.

I recommend giving the model a spray of matte varnish before putting that last highlight of white. Ghost tint acts a bit weird sometimes, and the varnish helps seal it in. An extra step, but one that saves you some heartache.

Very nice work. How did you do the wood grain on the coffin. I always have a tough time painting wood grain.

Years of painting and possibly selling scraps of my soul to some eldritch thing behind the local 711.

But for real, it's a multi-step process that takes a while but one that I've found works very well for an old wood look. I first figured it out while doing the catapults for my KoW Undead army.

  • Basecoat is a 50/50 mix of Reaper Bone Shadow and Vallejo Black Grey
  • Wash with Army Painter Strong Tone or GW Agrax Earthshade
  • Line highlight wood grain with Bone Shadow, then Reaper Khaki Shadow, followed by Reaper Terran Khaki
  • Light wash with Strong Tone
  • Glaze with Reaper Muddy Olive (I just water it down on a wet pallet until it's about watercolor consistency)
  • Sparing line highlights of the grain with Terran Khaki

While you don't strictly need the Muddy Olive glaze, I find it helps give that old, semi-rotted look that wood can get. Sometimes I'll go in and do some selective line shading on the deepest recesses with a black wash to give more distinction, but I really only do that on shields or other smaller wooden surfaces.
