Has 4e really been out that long?

Long enough where profits are dropping off I guess :)

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

4e came out in the summer of 2008. So, not even four years.

Blame that on an anemic release schedule in 2011 and the ill-received Essentials line.

I've not much hope this time around for three reasons: Mike Mearls, Monte Cook, and Open Playtesting. I still signed up for playtesting and will give it a shot, and keep an open mind, but so far I'm not as excited for this as I was for 4e--or hell, any other tabletop RPG that came out in the past couple years.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, though. I'd really like that.

Any idea what they're gonna change?

I liked 4th ed the game play was the same but the big thing for me was I could finally understand spells. yes, ii know it was like WOW with the way it was but thats the GOOD way.

and I don't know, what could they? other than basic races and classes mabey they will re-add the marshal even thought the Warlord is doing pretty good job of replacing it.

So. . .basically I should snap up as much 4e stuff as I can right now, before it gets ridiculously expensive like some of the older stuff.

Debatable. There's so much errata for 4e now that the original core books aren't worth the paper they're written on. You're better off either getting an Insider account, pirate things, or grab the old offline Character Builder and nab up the Something Awful crack of it and go from there.

You could also just wait a bit, because people are stupid and will sell off all their 4e books for dirt cheap when 5e comes out.

Yeah I didn't follow too closely, but did they do some sort of playtesting post-release with 4e? It sounds like they changed a LOT of the rules in the main books. I did a little bit of online research that strongly suggested getting the Monster Vault instead of the Monstrous Manual(s) because they improved and tweaked a lot of the beasties.

WotC pretty much stopped listening to feedback unless it was loud enough, and even then only sometimes (see: the Cleric 'update' debacle some months back). There's still glaring problems in the system that have not been addressed nor are they likely to, though when compared to the clusterbag that is 3.5 it's minimal and can actually be glossed over if you don't really care.

The game runs fine for the most part, it's just the math is a bit...off, in the paragon and epic tier. This they tried to stealth-fix with Expertise feats (+1/2/3 to hit per tier for a particular weapon or implement) and Defense feats (+1/2/3 to fort, ref, and will per tier), which causes a feat tax since it'd be dumb NOT to take them. So long as you're aware of those problems and either jiggle the monster math a tiny bit or just offer them for free to the PC's, you'll be fine.

Basic problem with MM1 and MM2 monsters is the math; in MM1, too much HP and defenses and too little damage made fights last forever, and in MM2 they got the damage about right but still had a problem with HP and defenses. You'll want to get anything post-Monster Manual 3 for monsters, since MM3 finally fixed the math on how they should operate. MM3, Monster Vault, and Threats to the Nentir Vale are all solid choices for your PC-killing needs.

As an aside, the Dark Sun books are great. Highly suggested.
