Abhorsens TMOG 2012

Postby Abhorsen » Tue Feb 21, 2012 3:03 am

mk, soooooooooooooooooooo hello there again.

its only been acouple of months since the last TMOG ended but it feels like much longer, and still feels like last week at the same time. but i am back! and ready to start a new year well kinda.

anyway, starting my log a little late and as such have little bit of back log to post up.

since last we spoke, i have been working not as much as i would like to on minis due to work, but i am still getting a good amount of painting in now that i look at it. january was a fairly dead month until... i found out there would be a crystal brush qualifier at templecon. so excited and full of ideas i began work on an epic project only 2 and 1/2 weeks from the con ><. i was able to finish the diorama in time but it required most of my free time for those 2 weeks and a sleepless night before the day of submission.

anyway here are some pictures of my entry, it took second in the open category.

i am happy that i was able to finish it in time.

i have also been working slowly on my outcasts for malifaux, i painted up one of the viktorias and sue some in january but finished them just recently. just stripped the paint off the rest of the band, and started work on there bases.

took me forever to find the right product to do cracked bases for them but i found this paste that Martha Stuart puts out that is perfect. really excited to have these all done lots of fun models with lots of character to paint.

than there is the hell project, i didnt realize how annoying these guys were going to be to paint. they are my pledge for this month. a squad of penal legionares for my ig. since i am doing steel legion i wanted my penal legions to be hive gangs. so i bought some ratskins. they look pretty cool from afar but o man are they some shitty models to paint. i have had nothing but problems both with theme and aplication of paint to these little buggers. what started as a hopeful speed paint has turned in a slugish and slow experience. but they are half way done and i will be happy to have them out of the way and off the painting table. no pics of them yet but soon i hope.

So some may think i am totally insane, but i also entered iron painter. its a online painting competition where u are matched against other painters, and than judged and the winner moves on the next round. each round has a theme, and u have 2 weeks to build and paint your master piece. i am actually super excited to partake and see what other people come up with. something like 144 people entered! i am going to use this log to track my progress in it, and it will take up much of painting time if i make it far.

it started yesterday, the theme is start your engines. anyone have any good ideas for a diorama?

the only ones i have come up with so far are someone starting a chainsaw with 3 or 4 zombies running right for them, a warjack that looks normal from the front but is disected in the back with a mech scratching his head at all the parts. still trying to come up with more creative ideas and would appreciate any suggestions.

also looking for critiques of my photos, since the judging will be done based on the photo i submit. for the pictures i just posted i used 3 lights, one with a daylight florescent, one with a normal florescent, and one small halogen lamp over head. the daylight was on the left the florescent was on the right and the halogen was above. i used a tripod for steadiness, and tissue paper to soften the light a little. i am liking the black back drop more and more but let me know what u guys think.

Edit: hmm that's weird the forum seems to brighten my images a whole bunch when i open them in another tab they are the way i uploaded them but viewing them in the thread they are supper bright, is this just me or everyone?

o i also want to take some army wide shots of my ig and orks, just to see them all :).

anyway long first post, lots of work to do.

Cheers all, keep on painting!

this squad was such a pain in my butt, but oddly i am fairly ok with how they came out. they are decent enough to go on the table, they just took far far to long to achieve even tabletop quality.

anyway cheers all happy painting!!

hey all long time no post been super busy with real life. but i have had a little hobby time, last month i paint up only one mini :(, had fun doing it tho. this month i was little more successful. i got commisioned to do a FSA dystopian wars fleet and i also finished taylor for my outcasts.

here is my convict gunslinger from last month.

here is taylor from this month

and here are the FSA, i am pretty proud with how these came out. i spent about a total of 8 hours on them which i think is pretty good for the end result. i really like painting these models they are fairly simple but still full of detail, and they look really cool when they are all painted up.

hoping to get back in the hobby swing of things but we shall see, keep on happy painting all :).

spent a good amount of time figuring out the scheme for my french but i am pretty happy with how it turned out. tried some masking techniques and weathering with the airbrush.

next month i hope to get back to malifaux, but i also have a whole bunch of buildings to paint for dystopian wars.

Chears all!

Great work Mike. I really like the color scheme for the FSA, and the subtle transition to the darker blue for the French.

wow been awhile since i have posted here...

sorry i have not been around like at all RL, and lack of motivation for most if not all of my projects has left me with very few finished models.

BUT

i have not been totally dormant

i have a game of fantasy planned soon, first in god knows how long, and it put that modeling itch back into me...

so here is a model i started probably well over a year ago and just now got to finish and paint last week.

here is the pre paint and base wip

Image

and here it is finished

Image

Image

Image

i am quite happy with how it came out, its a counts as plague claw catapult for my skaven army. i also finished basing and detail painting my Abom but i think i already took credit for it like a year ago lol, i will still post some pics. i have also been working on my hydra for my IG army so i will maybe post some wip of that later. i just realized that i never posted the rest of french models for dystopian wars either. i will have to get on it :9.

has anyone picked up the skirmish game set in the dystopian wars universe? i really like the models and would like to give it a try, the starter sets seem like a good deal.

again sorry for my absence from gaming in general hope to see you guys again soon :).

The plague catapult looks great. I havent trid the new dystopian legions as i wasnt generally impressed with the models, but if people were playing id certainly give it a shot. Good to hear from you again.

I love the Plague Catapult! Damn I love Skaven, and I can feel the urge to make an army again even though I haven't played fantasy in over 2 years. Must avert my eyes....must not be tempted....

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.
